With climate change remaining a hot topic in the construction industry. The Irish Green Building Council (IGBC) is challenging construction companies to step up and update their skills on working towards a more environmentally sustainable sector. They have high hopes for the sector’s progress in this area of sustainability and are working extensively to educate all those involved with the necessary information. Today we are taking a look at the sustainable attributes of modular construction. Modular construction has grown rapidly over the last decade, and this growth pattern is forecast to remain.  Could Modular building be the future of construction for those of us who are environmentally aware?

FACTORY ENVIRONMENT

Modular buildings are constructed within an efficient factory environment. This leads to a shorter building time frame with access to the necessary tools and stocked materials. Therefore a…….. Factory construction uses less energy than onsite. For example,  transport utilises a fraction of the energy that would be used for multiple site deliveries. The factory environment eliminates the need for construction workers to travel onsite daily for a lengthy period of time, often travelling far from their homes to use their particular skills onsite. This reduces the carbon emissions considerably.

STREAMLINED DESIGN

As Modular builds are so efficiently designed, within the aforementioned factory environment,  there is much less waste from building products. Each component is strategically thought out with an emphasis on ordering stock for multiple builds. This efficient method of working contributes to the environmental sustainability of constructing a modular building. There is also a wide variety of eco friendly materials available for the manufacturer with a large number of Irish construction product manufacturers publishing transparent environmental data on their products through the EPD Ireland programme. These include Medite Smartply, Munster Joinery, Quinn Building Products, Kilsaran, Kore and Ecocem. This makes it easier to pick the materials which will make the build more sustainable. With all this in mind,  it’s no wonder that modular builds are built to higher sustainability standards than traditional construction.

RECYCLABLE MATERIALS

The materials of a modular build can often be recyclable, which is rarely the case with a traditional build. This reusability of wood, metal and fittings is a definite attraction for those wishing to make a contribution to becoming more environmentally stable. And not forgetting Modular buildings’ greatest attribute of all – it can be relocated! Therefore you are free to bring your modular building from one location to the next, saving you the expense and waste of purchase of building a new one.
