DIY SOS : The Big Build Ireland

Project Description:

A Project That Meant More Than Just Building

Some projects are about much more than the work involved, and our involvement in DIY SOS: The Big Build in Walsh Island, Co. Offaly, was certainly one of them.

Arch-I Modular Solutions was delighted to be part of the incredible team that came together to help transform the Harte family’s home into a space that better meets their needs, both now and into the future.

From the beginning, this project was about bringing together the right people, materials and expertise to achieve something special within an exceptionally tight timeframe.

With tradespeople, suppliers, volunteers and local businesses all working towards the same goal, it was a fantastic example of what can be achieved when an entire community pulls together.

Our Involvement – Light Gauge Steel Framing

Our role in the project involved providing the Light Gauge Steel (LGS) framing solution, helping to deliver the required building structure efficiently and within the demanding DIY SOS construction programme.

With such a tight turnaround, traditional construction methods can present challenges around labour, sequencing and time spent on site.

This is where our panelised Light Gauge Steel Framing system offered a significant advantage.

Rather than constructing the entire framing system piece by piece on site, our team was able to carry out much of the preparation and manufacturing work in advance at our own facility.

Stage 1 – Design & Off-Site Manufacturing

The first stage involved preparing the Light Gauge Steel framing components to suit the project’s requirements.

Using our specialist manufacturing equipment, the steel sections were precision-formed and prepared for assembly.

The individual framing components were then assembled into panelised wall sections in a controlled factory environment, reducing the amount of work that would otherwise have been required on site.

This approach offered several important benefits:

  • Accurate manufacturing to the required dimensions.
  • Reduced on-site cutting, measuring and assembly.
  • Improved consistency and quality control.
  • Less material handling and waste on site.
  • Faster installation once the framing arrived.
  • Better coordination with the other trades working on the project.

By completing the panel assembly off site, we were able to make valuable progress before the installation team arrived in Walsh Island.

Stage 2 – Delivery to Walsh Island

Once manufactured and assembled, the Light Gauge Steel panels were prepared for transport and delivered directly to the project site.

The panels arrived ready to erect, allowing our installation team to move quickly into the construction phase.

This was particularly important on a project like DIY SOS, where multiple trades were working within a carefully coordinated programme and every day mattered.

By reducing the amount of fabrication required on site, our team could concentrate on erecting the panels and preparing the structure for the following stages of construction.

Stage 3 – On-Site Installation

With the prefabricated panels delivered, our team worked alongside the other contractors and volunteers to erect the Light Gauge Steel framing.

The lightweight nature of LGS, combined with the precision of the factory-manufactured panels, helped make the installation process efficient and manageable.

One of the biggest advantages of this method is the speed at which the structural framing can be assembled.

Rather than relying on lengthy on-site fabrication, the panels could be positioned, aligned and secured in accordance with the project requirements.

This helped the project progress quickly and allowed the following trades to continue their work without unnecessary delays.

Why Light Gauge Steel Framing Made a Difference

The DIY SOS project demonstrated the practical benefits of off-site manufactured Light Gauge Steel Framing, particularly when construction time is limited.

  • Speed of construction: Panelised manufacturing reduced the work required on site, helping the build progress within the tight programme.
  • Precision and accuracy: Factory-manufactured framing components provided a consistent and accurate system for installation.
  • Reduced on-site disruption: Preparing the panels before delivery meant less cutting, measuring and fabrication were needed on site.
  • Efficient coordination: The framing could be installed quickly, helping other trades move forward with their respective elements of the build.
  • Strength and durability: Light Gauge Steel Framing provides a strong, lightweight and durable structural solution suitable for a wide range of building applications.

For Arch-I Modular Solutions, this project was a great opportunity to demonstrate how modern methods of construction can make a meaningful difference, not just in commercial projects, but in creating spaces that genuinely improve people’s everyday lives.

Creating a Home That Works for the Harte Family

While we are proud of the framing solution we delivered, the most important part of this project was always the family at the centre of it.

The goal was never simply to complete construction work. It was to help create a home that would make everyday life easier, more comfortable and better suited to the Harte family’s needs.

Knowing that our work contributed to creating that space is something our entire team can take pride in.

Watching the completed project on RTÉ One and seeing the reaction of the family brought home just how much the efforts of everyone involved meant.

It was also a proud moment for Arch-I Modular Solutions to see our Managing Director, Matt Fitzgerald, featured on the programme and to see the hard work of our team represented on screen.

A Special Thank You to Our Suppliers

Projects like this would not be possible without the support of the businesses and suppliers who generously contribute their time, expertise and materials.

We would like to extend a special thank you to our suppliers who supported our involvement in the Walsh Island project:

  • Tusker
  • Partel
  • Masonry Fixings
  • Greenspan

Your support and contribution helped us play our part in bringing this project together, and we are extremely grateful for your involvement.

We would also like to thank the DIY SOS production team, RTÉ, Indie Pics, the organisers, the wider construction teams and every supplier, tradesperson and volunteer who gave their time to make this project happen.

The dedication and generosity shown throughout the build were incredible to witness.

A Community Coming Together

One of the most memorable parts of being involved in DIY SOS was seeing the sense of community that surrounded the entire project.

People from different trades, businesses and backgrounds came together with one shared purpose: to help a family.

Everyone had their own role to play, and the success of the project was the result of those individual contributions coming together.

For our team at Arch-I Modular Solutions, it was a privilege to work alongside so many talented and generous people.

The project demonstrated not only what can be achieved through efficient construction methods, but also what is possible when people are willing to give their time and expertise to help others.

From Everyone at Arch-I Modular Solutions

We would like to wish the Harte family every happiness in their newly transformed home.

We hope it provides the comfort, practicality and space they need to enjoy many wonderful years together.

To everyone who helped make DIY SOS Walsh Island possible, thank you.

We are incredibly proud to have played a part in such a worthwhile project and to have contributed our Light Gauge Steel Framing expertise towards something that will make a real difference to a family’s life.
